Blauwkop blauwfazantje / Uraeginthus cyanocephalus

Een aantal jaar geleden was ik in het bezit van meerdere koppels Blauwkop blauwfazantjes. Een prachtig, klein en elegant vogeltje. Omdat ik volledig wilde overstappen op de verschillende Lonchura soorten heb ik toen besloten deze prachtige soort weg te doen. Waar ik achteraf altijd spijt van ben blijven houden. Begin april 2025 heb ik om die reden besloten weer een aantal koppels aan te schaffen. De Blauwkop blauwfazantjes zijn erg nieuwsgierig en als je als verzorger hun vertrouwen hebt gewonnen zijn ze ook best brutaal. Niet de moeilijkst te houden Afrikaanse prachtvink, best wel sterk en redelijk goed te kweken.

De mannen en poppen zal ik buiten de kweek net als mijn Lonchura's gescheiden houden van elkaar. Eventuele jongen zullen ook meteen gescheiden worden als de geslachten zichtbaar zijn. Qua verzorging hoef ik niks aan te passen wat het ook makkelijk maakt om deze prachtige soort te houden in combinatie met mijn andere soorten vogels.

Ik sluit niet uit dat er in de toekomst nog 1 of 2 andere soorten (Afrikaanse of Australische) tropen toegevoegd gaan worden aan de collectie. Verandering van soorten geeft soms ook weer een positieve draai aan het beleven van de hobby. Uiteraard blijven de verschillende soorten Lonchura's het hoofdbestand van mijn collectie vormen.

Op deze pagina zal ik met regelmaat een update geven en mijn ervaring delen over de Blauwkop blauwfazantjes. 

Ondertussen (december 2025) zijn de eerste jongen geboren. Zoals bekend bij meerdere Afrikaanse soorten gaat het niet altijd vanzelf. Het ene koppel is het andere niet, zo ook hier. Hopelijk volgen er met de tijd nog meer jongen. 

A few years ago I owned several pairs of Uraeginthus cyanocephalus. A beautiful, small and elegant bird. Because I wanted to switch completely to the different Lonchura species, I decided to get rid of this beautiful species as well. Which I have always regretted afterwards. At the beginning of April 2025 I decided to buy a few pairs again for that reason. The Uraeginthus cyanocephalus are very curious and if you have their trust as a caretaker, they are also quite cheeky. Not the most difficult African finch to keep, quite strong and reasonably easy to breed.

I will keep the males and females separate from each other outside of breeding, just like my Lonchuras. In terms of care, I don't have to adjust anything, which also makes it easy to keep this beautiful species in combination with my other bird species.

I do not rule out that 1 or 2 other species (African or Australian) finches will be added to the collection in the future. Changing species sometimes also gives a positive twist to experiencing the hobby. Of course, the different types of Lonchuras will continue to form the main stock of my collection.

Meanwhile, the first young have been born. As is well known with several African species, this doesn't always happen smoothly. Not all pairs are the same, and this is no exception. Hopefully, more young will follow in due course.
